Table 8.7 Measurement model parameters for women's reproductive rights (standardized solutions in parentheses)

Of the four indicators of secularization, two have high R squared values. They are URBAN and AGRLAB. The other two indicators have moderate to low R squared values. In particular, the R squared value of LITER is low, about 0.30. The two indicators of women's education, FEMLITER and FEMSEC, have high R squared values, indicating adequate levels of reliability. The R squared value of FEMLITER is about 0.90, and that of FEMSEC is 0.71.

Among the observed variables of gender equality (FMMEAN, POLEQUAL, SOEQUAL) two indicators, POLEQIJAL and SOEQUAL, are found to have low levels of reliability. The R squared value of POLEQUAL is 0.25, and that of SOEQUAL is 0.28.

Total fertility (FERTI) and annual growth rate (GROWTH) are reliable indicators of population growth potential, with R squared values of 0.901 and 0.655, respectively. Among the indicators of women's reproductive rights, personal rights to interracial, interreligious, or civil marriages (INTERRAC) is the most reliable indicator. About 84 percent of the variance in this variable is accounted for by women's reproductive rights controlling for the other four indicators. About 45 percent of the variance in the indicator DIVORCE is accounted for by women's reproductive rights controlling for the other indicators. ABORTION and SUPPORT have low R squared values, 0.17 and 0.23 respectively. These two indicators will be retained for substantive reasons even though they have low reliability values.4

The confirmatory factor analysis results provide reasonable empirical evidence of the construct validity of the proposed latent traits that are hypothesized to influence the selected indicators.
